Haga Haga Hotel: the perfect base for unforgettable Wild Coast holidays

BY WENDY COLDREY - JULY 26, 2017

What a wonderful weekend away at a true gem of the Wild Coast. Located just 60km from Beacon Bay, East London, Haga Haga Hotel offers a lovely relaxing venue with great views and excellent hospitality as well as great value for money.

We arrived after in the afternoon on a hot and sunny day after negotiating the last stretch of the gravel road that leads up to this 3-Star establishment - thankfully the road is getting upgraded.

As we pulled up, we found Peggy, one of the owners, waiting for us. She later took us our suite - a luxury honeymoon suite (little did they know that we have just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary) that boasts the most amazing views of the surrounding hills, sun-kissed beaches, tidal pools and the Indian Ocean beyond.

Haga Haga actually offers 11 comfortably furnished en-suite rooms - all with breathtaking views of the ocean. The suites come with either twin or double beds, an en-suite with bath or shower, sea-facing balconies, tea/coffee facilities, radio, fans and heating.

There are also eight self-catering chalets, which have sea-facing decks, barbeque facilities, open plan lounges and kitchens. TV with DSTV, radio, full size fridge, stove, microwave all crockery and cutlery, bedding, linen and towels are all supplied. These chalets are serviced daily with the exception of the washing of the dishes. All you need to bring are your own beach towels and beach umbrella. They also offer laundry and baby sitting services if needed.

Once we were settled in, we took a walk down to their outdoor Sandiwana Bar and Restaurant where we had a pub lunch consisting of Monkeygland Burgers and chips, which we found very well-prepared and delicious. The restaurant serves from light meals, salads, sandwiches, mouth-watering steaks to seafood platters and pub grub. Their famous braai’s are served on the patio outside the bar.

The bar is the best place to meet the locals and enjoy a lovely cocktail before dinner on the patio or an evening night cap. Live sporting events also shown on the big screen. Satied, we emptied our drinks and took a lobng afternoon walk on the beach.

There is plenty to see and do in the area from the friendly locals  selling wicker baskets and colourful beadwork along the roadside to following the many pathways to the beach. We enjoyed paddling in the sea and tidal pools. It was lovely to see children enjoying the outdoors as well as fishermen on the rocks and surfers out at sea.

If you forget your costume, hat or fishing gear for the kids at home, the hotel's Beachcomber Curio Shop has a wide range of items for sale including lovely gifts - and don’t forget to buy our famous Haga Haga Chili sauce.

For those not eager to venture out, Haga Haga Hotel itself has lots to offer from tennis, pool and darts, volley ball, basket ball, swimming pool, hiking trails to horse riding and even a mashee golf course just 2km away.

I found the area a shell collector's dream especially as cowries are found along this beach.

From our walk, we ended the afternoon relaxing on our patio with a book in hand while watching the sea transform as the sun set. We also managed to watch a game of rugby as our room had DSTV.

We later went out to supper at the hotel's dining room. For starters, I decided to try their Crumbed Mushrooms while Ron had their Crumbed Calamari, which were both very tasty.

For the main course, I had their delectable Sirloin Steak and Calamari Steak Combo. I have never tasted calamari and steak cooked to such perfection! It was served with veggies, chips, rice or potato. As a side dish, I had fried onion rings.

Ron had their Rump Steak basted in Haga Haga sauce with veggies and chips and a side dish of onion rings as well. He said it was awesome and he enjoyed his meal as well. The service was excellent and we finished off with ice cream and choc sauce.

We were fortunate to meet one of the owner couples, Sandy and Neil, and were given such a lovely warm welcome at dinner. The Chef also came to introduce himself to every table, which I found lovely. He was so friendly and wanted to know if we were all happy with our servings.

After such a big meal, we decided to take an evening walk on the beach as the area felt so safe. It was also nice to just sit on the patio and watch the other couples, who were staying in the self-catering chalets enjoying themselves and braaing.

The entire hotel is also certainly child friendly.

We later decided to call it a day and slept with the pleasant sound of waves breaking on the beach.

The following morning, we woke up to an awesome sunrise and later headed down to the dining room where we had a yummy Full English breakfast. From fruit juice, fruits, cereals, yoghurt, bacon, sausage, mince, liver, baked beans, tomato and egg, there was plenty to order. The staff were once again so friendly.

With our batteries re-charged, we went out exploring the area. Sadly, that same day we would say good-bye to our hosts and head back to the city. I would recommend this hotel to anyone - young and old, as well as families and romantic couples looking for a perfect weekend away at a place to enjoy a relaxing outing for great value for money.

Haga Haga is also the ideal destination for your company conference and team-building activities as there is very little outside influences to distract your delegates. The conference venue can seat up to 50 delegates and has an overhead projector, white boards and flipcharts, TV and video as well as a data projector. A full range of activities can be catered for your needs.

The hotel is the perfect place for weddings. A stone’s throw from unspoilt endless beaches set to the backdrop of rolling hills and magnificent ocean views, the Haga Haga wedding venue caters for both indoors and outdoors events. The rocks and beach around the hotel provide a stunning backdrop for those special photographs. Friends and Family can all be accommodated in the hotel and their village.

The chapel in the village can accommodate 80 people or alternatively the deck alongside their pool and overlooking the ocean can be used for your ceremony. The Hotel offers a full catered plated service with drinks.
