Medihelp Train Race 2017 sees victory for the train - yet again

The annual Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race, which was sponsored by Medihelp this year, took place on Sunday with an impressive record of entries.

The Train Race has been taking place for four years now and aims to raise funds for a certain charitable organisation each year. For 2017, the charity receiving funding is Love Story in Port Elizabeth.

The race kicked off at 9am on Sunday morning at the Port Elizabeth Station with over 100 teams entered in an attempt to best the train. But this year the Metrorail and Prasa team manning the train were determined to keep their first place trophy and reached the Uitenhage Station first for the second year in a row.

Teams for the train race are made up of five runners, and one Mountain Bike Cyclist, with the route divided into six stages to cover a distance of 38km. However there is also an individual category where one runner attempts to complete the entire 38km trek on their own.

It was another victorious year for the train as it came in first place yet again. Coming in a mere three minutes after the train was the Gamble Pharmacy team.
