Pro Dive Black Tie Barefoot Ball in Aid of the African Penguin

NOVEMBER 23, 2017

As a token of appreciation for what the ocean has given us over the years, Pro Dive is arranging a fundraising event to coincide with their 21st Birthday. All proceeds for the event will go to The Penguin Research Fund, bringing in much needed funds to the marine conservation of the Algoa Bay Penguins.

Pro Dive was established in 1996 by Louis and Michelle Van Aardt as a small 2-man dive operation at the landmark Red Windmill at Hobie Beach. Many Port Elizabeth residents will be familiar with Pro Dive operating from the Red Windmill; the years they traded in Walmer Park Shopping Centre. And now in their landmark state-of-the-art Dive Centre, retail outlet, specially designed scuba diving pool and travel centre at 189 Main Road, Walmer.

Pro Dive was the first PADI 5-star dive centre in the Eastern Cape, which is the highest dive centre accreditation worldwide. Pro Dive has trained the most students in South Africa, with more than 11000 trained scuba divers.

Due to the love of diving and traveling, Louis and Michelle established Pro Dive Travel, which not only takes South Africans to all the best dive destinations worldwide, but also markets South Africa as a dive destination at big scuba diving trade shows Worldwide.  This plays a major role in Tourism for Nelson Mandela Bay by bringing groups of tourists to Algoa Bay specifically to dive.

The Penguin Research Fund was launched in 2010 by Dr Lorien Pichegru, to raise money for research into the reasons behind the 70% drop in African penguins in South Africa and into appropriate conservation measures to halt this decrease. Since then the Algoa Bay penguin population has stabilised, whereas penguin numbers on the West Coast keep decreasing.

This is an entirely non-profit event.  The aim is to have 300 attendees for a good meal, great entertainment and to get all marine enthusiasts and other local businesses together for a successful fundraiser.

The Barefoot Ball will take place on Saturday, the 9th of December at 6:30pm at the Beach Venue in Happy Valley. The dress code is strictly black tie, and barefoot. Tickets are on sale for R375 per person and can be bought at Pro Dive's Dive Centre in Main road, Walmer. Make sure to book yours by emailing
