Reach new heights at the Valley Crag Rock Wall Climbing Centre

There are many, who believe that in Port Elizabeth, there is not much to do, especially during the festive season. But new events and activities have been popping up a lot recently in the Friendly City that challenge this notion.

From Fat Biking down on the Beachfront to trying out a scenic Segway Tour along the Beachfront, another new activity that has become available to both tourist and locals alike in PE is the new Valley Crag Rock Wall Climbing Centre down in Lower Valley.

“There’s not a whole lot to do in PE, and this is a fun activity to do particularly for families. Climbing really knows no age; you can be big or small, old or young,” said Ian Clifford, owner of the Valley Crag.

Being the adrenalin junkie that I am, I was more than excited to head on down to the centre and give rock wall climbing a try. Seeing as the last time I attempted this was when I was a child, I was curious to see how well I could do.

Upon arrival, you are greeted by friendly and enthusiastic staff as they fit you with special climbing shoes and safety harness. You can then choose which wall you want to try and once you are safely secured you can make your way up the wall.

The Valley Crag offers safe and exciting rock wall climbing space for children and beginners of the sport. There are also courses for the seasoned climber to challenge themselves and test their skills.

It also has a climbing arch for those wanting to test their strength, a bouldering cave for those daring enough to climb without a rope and wanting to build up their strength. The centre is perfect for children and the friendly staff will keep them entertained and safe as they climb.

“This also helps getting the kids away from technology and gives them an opportunity to be active. I just think it’s a really cool activity for individuals and families. Spending their time on the walls here, getting fit and active and enjoying the festive season,” says Clifford.

Climbing the walls was a lot of fun; I enjoyed challenging myself to see what different routes I could take and how high I could go. Though I was not brave enough to attempt bouldering; where you climb without the rope, it was still amazing to see others attempt it.

If you are in PE during the festive season and are looking for something new and exciting to do I highly recommend going down to the Valley Crag Rock Wall Climbing Centre at 16 Lower Valley Road, Baakens Valley.
