Hacklewood Hill exudes charm and excellence

BY GRAEME LUND - AUGUST 7, 2018

Polished shoes, creased slacks and formal jacket are not my style. But every now and again, I love to don my jacket and, arm in arm with my love, visit a restaurant that rates such smart attire.

There are a pitiful few in Port Elizabeth, and there is one that makes it all worthwhile. Hacklewood Hill, nestled away in the quieter part of Prospect Road, Walmer, is charming, elegant and full of character.

Oil paintings, Persian rugs, deep sofas and roaring fire in the lounge make the glass of sherry all the more enjoyable.

The dining area is small and intimate and guests tend to whisper to each as they dine.

The menu offers a three-course meal and the award-winning wine selection is one of the best in the city. The table is carefully laid with a Victorian array of silverware and beautiful glassware.

The menu changes from time to time and can be viewed on their website.

On a recent romantic evening, my partner and I had the Butternut Soup and Tempure Prawn Salad followed by Beef Fillet Medallions and the Seafood Bisque. As we, rather inelegantly, but in true foodie style, sampled each-others plates, I can report that they were all superb.
