Participants of the 2018 SPAR Women’s Challenge found their wings every step of the way

AUGUST 8, 2018

The annual Pretoria leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge that took place on 4 August at the SuperSport Park in Centurion demonstrated the popularity of this race once again! The vibe and joie de vivre was palpable as 25 740 people took part in the 5km and 10km races. The theme ‘FindYourWingz’ was taken literally by some participants, wearing colourful wings and wigs!

The Deputy Minister of Communications, Ms Pinky Kekana, attended the race and her interest in and attendance of this race was highly appreciated. “We celebrate this special relationship between women and SPAR. SPAR reiterates the fact that women (and men!) from all walks of life and age can join hands, engage and become friends during the challenge. This event celebrates Women’s month in style, and therefore we should support SPAR for this good cause”, said Kekana.

Glenrose Xaba crossed the line at 33:56 to claim first place. Irvette van Zyl came in at fourth place – after giving birth just eight weeks ago! She set a course record of 00:33:32 in 2014.

Keeping everyone entertained throughout the day on the main stage was a line-up of some of the country’s most popular acts of the moment - Jan Bloukaas, Vernon Barnard, Martin Bester, Denim and Willem Botha.

Charities that benefitted from the SPAR Women’s Challenge were Good Morning Angels (Jacaranda FM); Chrysalis; Hanna Charity and Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer.

For now the 2018 race is over and already social media is buzzing with messages of the ladies who are looking forward to next year. Until then, each participant has a green t-shirt and a race medal to remind them to of the race theme, ‘FindYourWingz’.
