Take It Slow - The Slow Carb Diet And Why It Works

BY NATALIE MAJOR - SEPTEMBER 5, 2018

It’s not just a fad, it’s not just a buzzword, the slow carb diet really works and here’s why.

1.    It’s Simple

  • Cut out fruits, sugars and white foods (think bread, potatoes, and pasta).
  • Up your lean meat, bean and vegetable intake.
  • Give yourself a day off each week. Yes! You can cheat once a week.
  • Keep an eye on what you are eating. There are a lot of apps available to help you keep track of what you are consuming.
  • Get the book. Tim Ferriss’ book “The 4-Hour Body” goes in depth about the benefits of this diet.

2.    It’s Healthy

When you‘re on the slow carb diet you’ll burn fat quickly as you avoid the foods that promote weight gain through storing fat!

3.    It’s Cheap

Whereas other diets will have you spending a fortune on fancy and hard to come by ingredients, the slow carb diet is relatively inexpensive.

4.    It’s Easy To Maintain

One of the foundations of the slow carb diet is eating the same meals over and over. Each meal should ideally consist of protein, legumes, and vegetables, which makes stocking your pantry ingredients a breeze.

5.    It’s Thirsty Work

Stop drinking calories! Drink loads of water as everything else contains hidden calories or hinders your weight loss goals.

Some Tips And Pointers:

  • Aim to get a minimum of 20-30 grams of protein per meal (especially at breakfast).
  • Take a multivitamin supplement as you could be lacking certain nutrients.
  • Always consult your doctor before embarking on a new eating plan.
  • Don’t snack, but if you do, go for nuts, hummus, peanuts and the like in moderation.
  • Avoid fruit the most. Fruit will become your nemesis as they are high in fructose and raise your insulin levels.
  • The early bird catches the worm! Try to get a high protein breakfast in within an hour of rising and shining.
  • If you feel a hunger pang, have another slow-carb meal instead of snacking.

In a nutshell or if you will, pea pod, this diet is right up your alley if you are looking for something effective, economical and easy to sustain.  On your day off you can eat and drink whatever you wish as much as you wish. That way you will also not feel like you are depriving yourself and have a reward day to look forward to.

The idea behind this is also to keep your metabolic rate up as well as thyroid function at its optimal operating level. The weekend is a great choice for your treat day, as this is when you want to be socializing with friends and family, and a glass of bubbly or a cocktail is the perfect excuse!

With any new eating plan, the first couple of weeks will be testing, but as you get into it and start following a routine, it will become a lifestyle rather than a diet. Never mind the fact that once you, and those close to you, start noticing the rapid results you’ll be even more motivated to continue.
