Roodevalley Hotel - a serene country destination

BY NATALIE MAJOR - SEPTEMBER 17, 2018

Situated on the banks of the Pienaars River, Roodevalley makes for beautiful sunsets with prolific water-bird life.

Not even an hour’s drive out of Johannesburg into the north of Pretoria, Kameeldrift to be more precise, you will find this peaceful and welcoming hotel located along a scenic river.

Beautiful green lush gardens with the most amazing bird-life welcome you as you soak up the gorgeous scenery, reminiscent of the KwaZulu Natal wetlands.

This quiet little sanctuary will make you feel as though you have left Gauteng far behind you. Sitting on the benches on the river bank makes for the perfect place to sip a sundowner as the African sky changes from blue to pink, mirroring the reflection on the water.

“The view from our jetty is beautiful and we often host live music to be enjoyed on the lawns. A private candlelit dinner for two is something special on our jetty,” remarks a friendly staff member, and I agree; one could quite easily stay there for hours, just taking in the natural beauty of the river, sky and wildlife.

The reception is modern with great big mirrors and neutral tones. Wooden tables are sprinkled here and there, and the couches are large and inviting with heavy feathery cushions.

Most of the rooms lead down to the river with stunning views. The restaurant, which originated from the original farmhouse, is quaint and unpretentious with eager staff waiting to be of assistance.

Our executive thatch room was large with a King-size bed, two wingback chairs and a nice sized patio. The bed was fitted with an electric blanket (a treat in winter) and we had a flat-screen TV as well as tea and coffee making facilities. The hotel offers free WI-FI and we were able to connect our devices with no trouble at all.

There is a lovely pool and jacuzzi area, complete with a trampoline for the kids. The hotel is geared for functions and has great conferencing and wedding facilities. Take advantage of an Africa Spa treatment at their Holim’a Metsi Spa.

I loved this place and will be returning with my family in the warmer months for sure! If you’re thinking of a quiet place to take a loved one or the family, think Roodevalley. It’s close, relaxed and oh so pretty!
