Enjoy memorable family stays at Protea by Marriott Hunters Rest

BY NATALIE MAJOR - SEPTEMBER 25, 2018

The Protea Hotel Hunters Rest lies between the majestic Magaliesburg Mountains, setting the backdrop for the most breath-taking views.

A short 1½ hour drive from Johannesburg will see you leave the hustle and bustle behind you as you arrive at your holiday sanctuary. Only 8.5 kms from Rustenburg and 50kms to Sun City and the Pilanesberg National Park, Protea Hotel Hunters Rest is the perfect location for a weekend family breakaway.

With so much on offer, even the most active families will find it difficult to fit everything in. A well-maintained 9-hole golf course, kiddies play area, large swimming pool, smaller heated pool, mini golf, push bike track, mountain bike trails, walking trails and day spa.

Nearby attractions include Magaliesberg Canopy Tours, Paul Kruger Country House, Cradle of Humankind, Hartebeespoort Dam, Elephant Sanctuary, Kgaswane Nature Reserve and Olifantsnek Dam.

Think Rustenberg is a sleepy hollow? Think again, it is home to events like the Piek Fijn Food & Wine Festival, Brauhaus am Damm October Fes and the Tarentaal Theatre, featuring local talent.

General Manager, Pieter Buitendag, adds “We welcome families and want them to enjoy everything we have to offer, this is a place to unwind and enjoy nature.”

The main area, consisting of a restaurant and bar, is elegance personified, and the view from here is quite magnificent. The glorious swimming pool area has ample sun loungers and thatch umbrellas to escape the summer sun.

The property boasts a beautiful boma area for private functions that would make for an unforgettable night under the stars. The rooms are spaced out nicely in blocks above the pool area. The spa is really well-priced and often run great specials for couples.

They even offer kiddies treatments for ages four and up. Take a long walk around the property and the area surrounding it and monkeys, squirrels and abundant varieties of birdlife greet you around every corner.

The air-conditioned family rooms are very spacious, with a guest room and adjoining kiddie’s room with bunkbeds. The décor is tasteful with copper tones, natural woods and woven headboards. A lovely touch was added to the room, a drawstring bag containing a party pack for the kids.

The family rooms have a large veranda and offer self-catering complete with kitchenette accommodating a fridge, microwave, two-plate stove and built in braai - just the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon; lighting the fire and sipping a cold beverage as the sun dips behind the dramatic quartzite cliffs.

Breakfast is always a highlight for me when staying at a hotel and Hunters Rest did not disappoint. There was a wide variety to choose from and my husband swears that his omelette was the best one he’s had to date whilst my six-year-old beamed at Nutella and Melrose spreads for his toast!

I have come across few places where there is so much for a family to take advantage of. I will be returning soon, hopefully in the summer months, as the pool and spa will be calling my name.

Next time, you think of a family getaway. Think Hunter’s Rest – there really is so much to do and see!
