Discover the flavours of Asia at Saigon Suzy

It was a reunion of ex-colleagues from over nine years ago that brought me to the very popular Saigon Suzy Asian-Fusion restaurant.

With its Southeast Asian street-food inspired menu, karaoke bar and outdoor rooftop garden, the Saigon Suzy eatery reminded me of a hole in the wall that the American soldiers might have frequented whilst stationed in Vietnam and it certainly ticks all the boxes for one joyful dining experience.

Saigon Suzy has a great atmosphere

The restaurant has the most delightful décor – brick walls with beautifully painted murals, bar with a dragon motif and industrial style seating, it’s simple and unique with just the right amount of Orient flair.

Saigon Suzy has three distinct areas: “The Market”- main restaurant and bar, the “Cherry Blossom Garden” located upstairs for lovely summer days and moonlit cocktails, and the “No Tell Motel” which houses the karaoke rooms.

The lead up to the karaoke bar is simply genius – a staircase with the backlit lyrics of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” from the 1980s.

The restaurant is quirky and fun and the staff personify the atmosphere. Saigon Suzy does not take herself too seriously and makes you feel right at home.

Experience a fusion of flavour

The menu is printed off for you to tick your selection (after you have completed your  ”Rock Star Name” on top). Saigon Suzy serves pretty tasty food in the form of baos, dumplings, Vietnamese rice noodles, skewers and wok dishes.

We opted for an assortment of things to share between the five of us, so that we could get a little of everything.

We had the Wok fried calamari with mint, chilli, lime and coriander, the sweet corn amaizeballs with sriracha mayo, KFC Korean fried chicken bao with spicy kewpie, pork and kimchi steamed dumplings and Thai beef mince lettuce cup wraps…Wow! What flavour sensations! I thoroughly enjoyed the calamari as well as the dumplings.

Dessert was hard to resist, and we went for the Tirami-Suzy and Warm Chocolate Brownie, a fortune cookie each and Vietnamese coffee (espresso with a shot of condensed milk)… Heaven!

The fortune cookies are unique to Saigon Suzy and our “fortunes” included; “Suzy says come back for a free beer tomorrow”; “you are the chosen one” and my favourite… “Suzy wishes you always get up from your computer with your headphones still attached!”

They also have an impressive drinks menu that includes a variety of Asian beer, Japanese whiskeys and sakes as well as cocktails like “Hanoi Hannah”, “Cherry Blossom” and the notorious “Singapore Sling”.

For a celebration with a difference, hire out a karaoke room and get your friends together for a “wok n roll” party!

Saigon Suzy plays hard to get and does not take bookings, therefore, seating is on a first come, first serve basis and I suggest you get there early.
