Delicious eats at Blacksmith's Kitchen

BY JULI-BETH LAWRENCE-SAVAGE - OCTOBER 30, 2018

High against Paarl Mountain, one of the most beautiful areas in the winelands, you’ll find Blacksmith’s Kitchen.  Owned and run by the Retief Family – who have farmed this vineyard since the 1800s – this cosy bistro-style restaurant is situated in the old blacksmith’s cottages on Pearl Mountain.

The restaurant immediately gives you that cosy homestead feel and the large, open windows offer panoramic views over the vineyards across the valley to the Drakenstein Mountains. With a fireplace inside, it’s a venue for any season.

The bistro-style menu is well balanced and delivers beautifully crafted, flavourful dishes.  For starters, we decided on a special - perfectly prepared tempura Kingklip medallions with house-made garlic aioli. We also ordered spicy chicken livers which melted in the mouth like butter, with just enough ‘kick’ to make the mouth water.

Our main course was oven-roasted beef fillet and seasonal Kingklip. The fillet was well-aged and cooked to perfection - tender and juicy - truly one for the carnivores, it was served with hand cut chips and seasonal veg from the farm garden. The Kingklip was served on a beetroot puree with crunchy veg and tempura avo and was fresh and delicious.

We also enjoyed a bottle of their Pearl Mountain Wagon Trail shiraz which was absolutely superb. All our plates went back nearly licked clean, but we had a little space left for the espresso crème brulee - and it was totally worth it!
